Ewan McGregor to star in WA feature film

International star Ewan McGregor has agreed to play a role in the highly anticipated crime thriller Son of a Gun, set to be shot in Western Australia in early 2013. The State Government, through ScreenWest and Lotterywest, is supporting Son of a Gun with funding under the ScreenWest Drama Production Investment Fund.

Written and directed by talented WA expat Julius Avery, Son of a Gun is a heist thriller is the story of a young man’s apprenticeship to public enemy No. 1, played by McGregor. The movie follows the award-winning filmmaker’s short film Jerrycan, which won the Jury Prize at Cannes and the Australian Film Institute award for Best Short Film in 2008.

Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said there was a lot of buzz among the WA film and television industry. “The drama industry in WA is booming with Tim Winton’s The Turning, An Accidental Soldier and These Final Hours all filming in 2012. The high-profile nature of this project and its commercial potential mean the WA screen industry will continue to grow.”
