NEW DEPARTMENT OF STATE DEVELOPMENT ESTABLISHED

On January 1, 2009, the Western Australian Government established the Department of State Development to drive the State’s economic development. Through its Director General Anne Nolan, the Department reports directly to the Minister for State Development, the Premier, the Hon. Colin Barnett.
The Department works in partnership with industry and provides leadership across Government to promote investment in Western Australia and help ensure that major public and private sector development projects are successful.

The Department of State Development has responsibility for:
• Developing and coordinating significant State projects, including the Kimberley LNG Precinct; Ord Expansion Project; and Oakajee Industrial Estate and Port Project.

• Attracting strategic investment to Western Australia, working with potential investors to attract and secure projects that develop the State’s vast resource base and strengthen industry capability.

• Facilitating major resource investment, assisting the success of resource, industrial and strategic infrastructure projects by helping developers obtain the necessary approvals, and negotiating and managing State Agreements which establish a framework for ongoing relations and cooperation between the Government and proponents of major projects.

• Advising Western Australian businesses about global opportunities, facilitating export and investment activities, helping build relationships and promoting the State internationally, including through 12 Western Australian Government offices located in key overseas markets.

• Reforming, monitoring and coordinating statutory approvals processes for large and complex development proposals and working to improve the overall approvals system, without compromising regulatory standards.

• Identifying and ensuring the development of strategic industrial land and infrastructure.

• Providing research, analysis and policy advice on strategic issues which impact on Western Australia’s economic development.

• Managing and developing State Agreements.
